Strawberry Leaves (Fragaria ananassa)
Strawberry leaves (Fragaria ananassa) are the leaves of the strawberry plant, which is best known for its delicious fruits. The leaves grow directly from the ground and are dark green, shiny and pinnate. They have a characteristic shape with three serrated leaflets. Strawberry leaves have a slightly tart, refreshing taste reminiscent of wild strawberries. They occur mainly in temperate climates such as Europe and North America, where strawberries are cultivated.
Health Effects
In various traditions of natural medicine, strawberry leaves are attributed numerous health-promoting properties. In homeopathy, for example, they are said to have anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects. Traditional Chinese Medicine recommends them to strengthen the immune system. The Ayurvedic teachings and Hildegard von Bingen also contain references to diuretic and digestive effects. However, many of these effects are not scientifically proven.
Possible Risks of Consumption
In general, strawberry leaves are considered harmless in normal amounts. However, excessive consumption of extracts, macerates or teas can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Allergy sufferers may also react to the ingredients. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are generally advised against taking them due to possible risks. Therefore, caution should be exercised when consuming strawberry leaf products and a doctor should be consulted in case of doubt.
